With the end of spring fast approaching and the beginning of summer just around the corner, the month of November brings beautiful weather, longer days and most importantly, an amazing reason to live in the moment and grow a moustache – with a purpose. This purpose is Movember – a community of every day people that is dedicated to raising money and making a difference in mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.
The Movember movement is the leading charity driving change in the area of men’s health and wellness. Since 2003 a group of 30 people has expanded to over 5 Million, and the organisation is working closely with global leaders in men’s health to ensure collaboration. Transparency and accountability are paramount within all 1250 Projects that have been funded and initiated in over 20 different countries worldwide.
On the Movember website, there are many useful tips and tricks that can be used to take actions towards living in the moment and creating happier and longer lives. One of the most important is to MOVE MORE, add more activity to your day, and do more of what makes you feel good.
This could be by finding an alternative to driving to work, you could walk to work, cycle to work, or get off your bus commute two stops early. Other options to find more active alternatives could be to take the stairs instead of the lift, to host that business meeting while walking with colleagues or even outside of the work environment, a catch up with friends that involves doing something active such as playing a sport, going to the beach and even a walk along a track. Being active can help you increase your mental wellness, improve your sleep patterns, and give you more energy.
This initiative has brought so many of our staff together and for a great cause that really supports the community. Our vision is to make a significant contribution to the quality of community life – and so our team is always looking for ways to connect with and support the community in which we live and work.
In the past few years, The Westport Club has embraced the idea of supporting the movement of Movember by encouraging everyone and anyone to participate. There has been some great moustaches and some noble fluff on the top lips of many of our male staff members. The introduction of ‘Mo Sista’s’ has enabled some of our female staff to join the fight, with the challenge of ‘Moving for Movember’. The challenge is 60kms over the month – a number sadly taken from the number of men lost to suicide across the world every hour. With staggering statistics like that, there has really never been a better time to get involved and do what you can to raise awareness for men’s heath.
Getting involved in your community and causes that are close to your heart is an important part of your own wellness – think about what matters to you, and push yourself to make a difference. We are so lucky to live in an area full of people doing just that – we can change the world, one step at a time!
